The story begins with a rusted iron chair on a stump we found by the slope adjacent to the highway. We are envisioning a wanderer sitting in that chair and watching the traffic of the metropolis in his eyes. He starts to meditate on the relationship between him and the city.

So what is the relationship between urban life and the city in large? We as the designer regard the community and the city as two separate layers that can be superimposed and benefit from each other. The connection is not necessarily physical, but phenomenal. We bridge the two sides with programs that can be beneficial to all livings. The combination of the two yields a richer environment.

The next step is to think about how to heal the urban pattern caused by the disruption of the freeway? We reconnect the dots (existing structure) and develop programs that can be adapted to either side of the community. We create places with memories. California is so gifted with a beautiful climate that the programs should encourage outdoor activities. We feature the site with local plants. We respond to the existing conditions such as commercial street, movie factories and residential areas with new retails, outdoor theater and recreation programs on the site. The younger generation is full of vitality. We aim for programs that could cultivate and nourish them who could stimulate communication and interactions for the elders.
